What's New for the 2020 Ford Explorer?

In a sea of small crossovers, the 2020 Ford Explorer excels at optimizing its size and shape. This model year has been refreshed. 200 pounds of weight have been shed from the previous year and the Explorer now rides on a rear-wheel drive platform. There are updated EcoBoost engines and even a hybrid powertrain option, as well. The 2020 Explorer has a new model trim - the ST which is the most powerful Explorer ever. For the 2020 release, there are four model trims available. There's the base model XLT that seats seven passengers and comes fully equipped with a power liftgate and push button ignition. The Limited model trim is the next step up and upgrades the exterior of the 2020 Explorer with dual chrome exhaust tips and chrome front grille. The interior gets heated, leather-wrapped steering wheel and premium leather seating.

The 2020 Explorer ST gets its own signature black grille, quad chrome exhaust and black accents all around the exterior. It also comes with a sport-tuned suspension system that helps the ST model carve out its own path. Lastly, there's the Platinum model trim. The exterior has satin chrome accents all around and it can be equipped with 21-inch aluminum wheels. The interior is resplendent with two-panel moonroof, perforated leather surfaces, and platinum-branded black carpets.

2020 Ford ExplorerIn typical Ford fashion, there are several powertrain options for the 2020 Ford Explorer. Most vehicles will feature a fuel-sipping 2.3 Liter EcoBoost inline four cylinder engine that gets a combined MPG of 24. It gets 300 horsepower thanks to its turbocharged engine. The Limited model trim comes with a 3.3 Liter hybrid V6 engine. The beefier hybrid V6 achieves 318 horsepower and 322 pound feet of torque. The Platinum and ST models come with a 3.0 Liter, twin-turbo V6. It's incredibly powerful with up to 400 horsepower on tap. All engine configurations are managed by a 10-speed automatic transmission and four wheel drive is optional.
