Ford Bronco Sport Becomes First Vehicle To Feature Parts Made of 100% Recycled Ocean Plastic

Microplastics in the ocean can be extremely dangerous to our health, and we see about 13 million metric tons of plastic entering into the oceans yearly. Much of this ocean plastic comes from discarded fishing equipment. To contribute to the removal of this plastic, Ford is using recycled ocean plastic in the construction of parts used on the latest model of the Ford Bronco. Harness clips attached to a wiring harness system used for the airbag setup inside the side panels of the Bronco are constructed with used plastic collected from the Indian Ocean.

Ford's Use of Recycled Materials

Ford has been using recycled materials to construct their vehicle parts for many years now. They have a part on the 2020 Ford Escape that utilized recycled water bottles when it was made. The Ford Bronco's harness clips are stronger, durable, and more affordable than other available options.

Ford is working closely with DSM Engineering to collect this plastic from the ocean. After the plastic is gathered, it is cleaned, dried, and formed into small pellets that make the construction of the parts much simpler. Hellermann Tyton is in charge of molding the plastic pellets into the final product. Ford has plans to expand their use of recycled ocean plastic in the future. They are looking into making transmission brackets and side rails with 100 percent recycled material.

We here at Surprise Ford encourage you to contact us at our Surprise location if you're interested in learning more about Ford's use of 100 percent recycled ocean plastic in constructing their latest Ford Bronco model. We would be happy to give you a tour of this vehicle as well.
