Vehicle Tips & Tricks: How to Change a Tire

Flat Tire

Tire service is very important, and knowing how to change a tire is one of the most important skills a driver can learn over their lifetime. This is because flat tires can happen anytime and anywhere, regardless of weather, road conditions and location. To ensure that our customers have a good idea of how to change their tire after a blowout, we’ve listed out a step-by-step guide.

Step #1. Pull off the road slowly and put on your hazard lights. Pop the hood of your car and put out any emergency flags you may have so that fellow motorists are sure to see you.

Step #2. Take out all your equipment, including the spare tire, jack and wrench.

Step #3. Take off the wheel’s hubcap then use your lug wrench to loosen the wheel’s lug nuts. Loosen them counter clockwise, but don’t remove them fully from the wheel.

Step #4. Raise the car about six inches off the ground using your jack. Be sure to read your car’s owner’s manual to find out the best spot to place the jack, so that you don’t hurt your car’s frame.

Step #5. Remove all the lug nuts. We recommend placing them in the hubcap to prevent them from scattering down the highway.

Step #6. Remove the flat tire by pulling it straight out and away from your car.

Step #7. Put on the spare tire by lining up the tire’s holes with the lug nut posts. Push the tire firmly until you feel resistance.

Step #8. Replace the lug nuts, but don’t tighten them fully.

Step #9. Lower the car then tighten each lug nut firmly back into place. Pop your hubcap back onto the wheel.

Step #10. Drive to Surprise Ford's service center to get a brand-new tire!
